It is the southernmost point of the Indian subcontinent and the southernmost city on mainland India, and is consequently known as "The Land's End."Kanyakumari is situated at the southern edge of the Cardamom Hills. Cape refers to land that has penetrated the sea, and Comorin was Kanyakumari's old name. During British rule, seamen and traders used the word cape to refer to the same location as Comorin.
Kanniyakumari is a tourist and pilgrimage destination known for its Shiva temple and a memorial to Mohandas Gandhi. According to legend, the goddess Kanya Kumari ("Youthful Virgin") defeated a demon on the town site.
According to the Temple Legend, this famed pilgrimage location in Kanyakumari was where the virgin goddess endured her penance after Lord Shiva failed to uphold his pledge to marry her. The goddess, enraged, murdered the demons and opted to remain a virgin.The town has spiritual significance since it is the home of the virgin goddess Kanya Kumari, a manifestation of Goddess Parvati, the holy Mother Goddess.
