Suchindram Shree Thanumalayan Temple

Suchindram Thanumalayaan Temple:

Suchindram, located nearly midway between Nagercoil and Kanyakumari, is a well-known pilgrimage destination. Suchindram, also known as Gnanaranya, is located about 7 kilometers from the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu and is famed for the Thanumalayan temple. The Thanumalayan Temple, erected in the 17th century, is well-known for its sculptural abundance and quality of workmanship.

It is one of the few temples in the country that worships the Trinity, or 'Brahma, Vishnu, and Ishvara'. The temple honors 'Sri Sthanumalaya', the God Trinity (Siva, Vishnu, and Brahma). The linga is divided into three segments. The top indicates Siva's "Sthanu" name, Vishnu's "Mal" name, and Brahma's "Aya" name. One of Suchindram's legends concerns Anasuya, Sage Atri's wife, and her chastity.

According to mythology, the trimurtis arrived before Anasuya as beggars. When she was prepared to serve, they made it clear that they would only eat if she served them naked. She used the power of her chastity to transform the three Gods into newborns and suck them. Anasuya restored the dieties in response to the Godesses' pleas. On the same area, a linga blossomed and is still alive.

Images of Vigneswari (a feminine form of Vinayaka), Goddess Aram Valartha Nayaki, Indra Vinayaka, Kala Bhairava, and Saakahi Ganapathy are also present. This temple contains inscriptions dating from the ninth century.
The temple was once controlled by the Namboodiris, one of the great Namboodiri families, known as the Thekkumon Madam.
The name 'Suchindram' is derived from the Sthala Purana. According to Hindu mythology, the king of Devas, Indra, was relieved of a curse at the temple's main linga. The term "Suchi" in Suchindram is thought to have originated from the Sanskrit word for "purify". As a result, Lord Indra is said to visit the temple every day at midnight to perform "Ardhajama Pooja", or worship.
Thirumalai Nayak and the Travancore Maharajas, who administered the temple till Kanyakumari's unification with Tamil Nadu, have made numerous contributions for its upkeep.
