Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (Gandhi Mandapam), Kanyakumari:
The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial, located along the coasts of Kanyakumari, was created to memorialize Mahatma Gandhi, our nation's father. Also known as Gandhi Mandapam, it is a crucial aspect of any Kanyakumari visit, providing a glimpse into India's historical richness as well as the life of India's greatest hero.
Mahatma Gandhi visited Kanyakumari twice: in 1925 and 1937. After his death in 1948, his ashes were stored in 12 distinct urns and distributed throughout the country. One of these urns was sent to Kanyakumari. Before immersions, it was stored at the location where the memorial presently stands so that the public might pay their final respects to one of India's greatest sons. Later, the ashes were immersed in the sea waters of Kanyakumari. Later, the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial or Gandhi Mandapam was built on the same site.
The Gandhi Memorial was finished in 1956. It is a great example of modern architecture, drawing inspiration from the Orissa architectural style. The center spire of this mandapam with pink portico stands 79 feet tall, symbolizing Mahatma Gandhi's age at the time of his death. The ceiling of Gandhi Mandapam is its most outstanding feature. It has an opening designed such that on the 2nd of October, Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, the sun's rays fall perfectly on the spot where his ashes were kept.
Another notable feature of the Gandhi Memorial is the spectacular view of the surrounding area from the memorial's top. So, while visiting Gandhi Memorial, take your time and enjoy the breathtaking views.
There is also a library with books, periodicals, pamphlets, and other types of literature from the pre-independence era. This library is open on Fridays and Saturdays every week. One can also see images of Mahatma Gandhi and other notable persons who have made significant contributions to India and the world.
The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial became administratively controlled by the Tamil Nadu Government's Public Department in 1978.Because it is close to Kanyakumari Devi Temple, visitors can visit both locations simultaneously.
