Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary
Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary
Deep within this forest, existence has a different tone, with norms and laws established by Nature that take their own course. This is where nature is at its best: quiet, serene, and wild. Welcome to Kanniyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary.
Kanniyakumari, India's southernmost tip, the junction of three major bodies of water, and a historic and religious location, astounds discerning travelers with its numerous virtues. However, one may be surprised to learn that a location famed for its beaches and aquatic bodies also houses one of Tamil Nadu's finest wildlife reserves. The Kanniyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary is a must-see attraction during your visit to the district.
The sanctuary, which covers 402.4 square kilometers in the Kanniyakumari district, is one of India's newest, having been proclaimed in 2008. Seven rivers originate in this forest, including the famous Pahrali and Thamirabarani rivers. The sanctuary is internationally known as a tiger reserve. However, the region's vegetation and animals are abundant and diversified. The area is noted for being a wildlife corridor with rich biodiversity.
There are numerous plant species, and the natural vegetation of this region includes southern thorn woods, dry deciduous, moist deciduous, semi-evergreen forests, and evergreen hill sholas with grassy downs. The tiger reserve also houses a variety of wildlife, including Indian bison, elephants, Nilgiri tahr, sambar deer, lion-tailed macaques, and Indian rock pygmies. You may also observe amphibians and insects that you have never seen before.
The sanctuary and its surrounding reserve forests also house a variety of indigenous tribes with distinct cultural practices.
